CALL FOR SUPPORT – “SRCE” CENTRE

Start counting 19 hours from now. Because, that is the time that will pass until the following person in Vojvodina take his or her life. Our country is among the top of the list when it comes to the suicide rate in Europe. This social problem affects all age groups, however, what is worrying is that it is growing among young people, i.e. that the second cause of death of the age group 15 to 30 is suicide, itself.

Many of these deaths could have been prevented, if at the moment of crisis, the person had felt the help and support. The impression that we are not alone in the hardest moments provides comfort and gives hope to move on.

The “Srce” Centre answers to 5000 calls, mails and chats of persons going through a crisis during a year. However, the number of those who need help is much higher.

“We would like to be available to a larger number of people who need support and help. In order to do that, we need to invest in the training of new volunteers, more quality equipment (telephones and computes), as well as space resources”, Timea Bodiš from the “Srce” Centre says.

For the past 27 years, the volunteers of the “Srce” Centre try to be there for people who suffer, to inform and educate those who work with sensitive groups, especially school and medical personnel. In order to be closer to young people, mail and chat support which follow their communication habits have been implemented. This is the unique service and the number of calls like these increases every year.

“We believe that the prevention of suicide is a matter of all of us and only by mutual acting can we make a difference. Fund raising for the expansion of our work is currently on, and each donation will be doubled by the Trag Foundation. The campaign will last until September, and we are currently raising the amount of 4000 EUR on annual level, to enable smooth functioning”, Timea adds.
