HOW DID WE UNLOCK THE DOOR TO 2019?

In 2015, we almost won the title, but lost it to them, in 2018 this city has raised the bar of everything that a European Youth Capital should do, and in December, in one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal, at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, we officially unlocked the door to the year of 2019.

“Cascais did a lot of things in the year of its capital, I primarily think of the establishments and mechanisms of local support, since that they did not have any of that, either strategy, action plans etc. as Novi Sad already has all of those, but they created all of that this year. That is their success and one of the main results. Our programmes and final goals are completely different, as are the opportunities in both cities, but we have some similar processes and programs, such as e.g. participatory budgeting, whose realisation they initiated last year. With the programme we have created and the number of activities for the following year, as well as the planned number of young people who will be participants, I will be free and modest to say that we will exceed them and I believe that we will really be the best capital so far”, Valentina Antić, International Cooperation Coordinator explains.

The ceremony was held with the presence of the highest officials of Portugal, officials of the European Union, as well as the representatives of young people from all of Europe.

“This is not just a local story. This is a story significant for all of Serbia. That is a nice, positive story about a city from our country, to show that we can be competitive in Europe in this significant field, European policy towards young people”, Miloš Vučević, the Mayor of Novi Sad says.

The title of the European Youth Capital is assigned by European Youth Forum, the authority which consists of almost ten million young people from the Old Continent. Even now, after the ceremony of the announcement of European Youth Capital 2021, which was held in Novi Sad, it is clear that our city will become a part of the list of extremely successful youth capitals, and our year has not even begun yet.

“There will be more than 200 activities which will be done in Novi Sad by OPENS and our team. Along with 42 partnership organisations, we are implementing another important part of OPENS programme. More than half a million people will go through all of that, not only from Novi Sad but the region and all of Europe”, Vukašin Grozdanić, OPENS 2019 Coordinatory says.

Novi Sad is the only city outside the European Union which has received this title. The programmes implemented within the title of the European Youth Capital are already implemented, but on 26 January, there will be a spectacular opening of the year of the capital and a free of charge concert of all citizens of Novi Sad. The idea is to enter 2019 loudly and to say that it is time for the voice of us, young people.
